Why
Trust The Bible? Three Reasons!
1. The Bible is perfect
unity from imperfect men.
The Bible is not one but
actually a collection of sixty-six books written over a period of 1600 years by
forty different authors! Each writer wrote under God’s inspiration. “All
scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may
be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” – 2 Timothy 3:16
Subjects covered in the
Bible include law, history, philosophy, poetry, prophecy, biographies,
Christian doctrine, and revelations of things to come. The Old Testament was
written mostly in Hebrew (a few portions are in Aramaic), while the New
Testament was written in Greek. Some of the authors were well-educated men
(Isaiah and Paul); others were common fishermen (Peter and John). Some were kings
and wrote from palaces (David and Solomon), while others
wrote from prison (Paul,
writing to the Ephesians).
There were statesmen
(Isaiah), priests (Samuel), warriors (Joshua), a Gentile doctor (Luke), a
Pharisee (Paul), and several apostles (John, Matthew, Peter). The Bible
possesses infinite variety of themes and styles. Some are highlights written in
a hurry (Mark), while others are carefully prepared (Luke).
Out of all this
diversity, the miracle is that there is perfect consistency of thought. It is
impossible to have any two qualified men write on any one subject today without
disagreement, much less forty apparently unqualified men over a 1600 year
period! Yet when there is one author, God, to inspire the thoughts of his
writers, unity prevails.
The central theme of the
Bible is man’s fall into sin and God’s solution (Jesus) to redeem him out of
darkness and into light. Never once do these authors claim to write their own
thoughts, but over 2000 times, they claim to be writing the words of God, as
they use phrases such as “thus saith the Lord.” This miracle alone gives
us the right to say the Bible is the work of God.
2. Prophecy
A lot of the Bible is
prophecy. The test of a prophet of God, as described by Moses, is that every
prediction must come true exactly as stated. When a prophet speaketh in the
name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing
which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou
shalt not be afraid of him - Deuteronomy 18:22 This has been the case in
hundreds of prophecies given by men of the Bible speaking God’s words.
Concerning Jesus alone, there were over 300 predictions made about Him long
before He was ever born! Every one of them came true, exactly as predicted!
Here are a few of them:
Isaiah stated that Jesus
would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14), He would be a descendant of
David (Isaiah 9:7), He would lead the life of a good shepherd (Isaiah
40:11), and He would heal the blind, the deaf, the lame, and the dumb (Isaiah
35:5). Isaiah told us the government would be upon His shoulders and that
He would be called the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). This prophet Isaiah
also told us about the coming crucifixion, when he said that Jesus would be
despised and rejected.
Men would turn their backs on Him, even though it was our grief and our sorrows
He would bear. He would be wounded (side pierced), bruised (beaten) and whipped
(thirty-nine times). God would lay OUR guilt on Him. He would stand silent before
his accusers (during the trials). He would be buried like a criminal, but in a
rich man’s grave (Joseph of Arimathea). Yet he would have a multitude of
children (Christians) and He would live again. All of these prophecies are
found in the 53rd chapter of Isaiah. Today, we know all of these and
other prophecies given by Isaiah and other prophets came true just as they gave
them. The probability that ALL of the more than twenty-one prophecies about
Jesus could come true exactly as stated is staggering, yet every single one was
fulfilled! Surely, these were the words of God and not mere men.
3. Science has been
proven by the Bible!
In God’s Bible, authors
often wrote about science, without even knowing it! Science tells us that blood
is what keeps the body alive. But God told us this over two thousand years ago
in explaining that it is the blood that atones for the soul (Leviticus 17:11).
That is why Jesus had to lose blood on the cross in order for man’s sin to be pardoned.
Columbus
set out to prove the earth was round instead of flat.2200 years before
Columbus, Isaiah wrote that “God sitteth upon the circle of the earth” (Isaiah
40:22), implying that the earth was
round! For centuries, it
was believed that the earth sat upon a pedestal. The Book of Job, perhaps the
oldest book of the Bible, records that God “hangeth the earth upon nothing”
(Isaiah 26:7). Astronomers admit they cannot count all the stars in the
heavens.
Jeremiah wrote that the
stars “cannot be numbered” (Isaiah 33:22). Paul, writing in the first
century, told us that all the stars are different, long before science affirmed
this (1 Corinthians 15:41).
Do you believe that there
was a man named George Washington, and that he was the first President of the
United States? Why do you believe it? Did you ever meet George Washington
face-to-face? Then how do you know there was such a man? You believe it because
a book tells you there was such a man! There is a book that tells of a God
and a man named Jesus Christ. This is a book you would do well to become
familiar with. If you don’t, I am certain the day will come when you will wish
you had!
