Where is the Newport Church Of Christ Located?

Well, the Newport Church Of Christ no longer exists, at least as a brick and mortar church building! Years ago, there was a Newport Church Of Christ, located on what is now called the 'Newport Island'.

Years ago, a renegade minister gained control of the original Newport Church Of Christ and, through the power of persuasion, and in contravention to scripture, destroyed what was in actuality a New Testament Church Of Christ as spoken of in the Bible. The building still stands, but it is no longer an official Church Of Christ.

I know this, because my wife's family actually had a groundbreaking ceremony and built the building. The groundbreaking and the finished building are in the link to the Photo Album. The Newport Church Of Christ sprang up from a small group of people that were worshipping in the building I now live in at 123 Beech Street. My wife pointed this out to me when we moved into 123 Beech in October, 2000.

It is a horrible thing when differences in a congregation cause a church to split. But it does happen. I was a member of the Garrard Street Church of Christ, located on Garrard Street in Covington, Kentucky, at the time it split in the late 1990's, under Minister Gaston Cogdell. It was a horrible time for all members. Faith was made weak, and in some cases, destroyed altogether for some members. Many members joined other congregations, at least one other one sprang up after the split, but some members ceased to attend church altogether – at a horrible spiritual loss.

I've often had thoughts and prayed about starting another Newport Church Of Christ. That may one day happen, and it may never happen, at least as a brick and mortar affair. But I have started it here, and hopefully, it will flourish and the ideas for man laid out in the New Testament, will touch some until that day comes. I would like to think God would support me, and that I could take on such a gigantic task, but the love of my life and my support, Janet Lee Curtis Combs, herself an original member of the original Newport Church Of Christ, died in the early hours of Saturday, November 11, 2006. She is buried at Peach Grove Cemetery, alongside Route 154 in Peach Grove.  I will lie beside her someday, for all of eternity. I know this because my name is already engraved on the stone, right beside hers.

This site is dedicated to my wife, Janet Lee Curtis Combs January 28, 1955 – November 11, 2006.
