Abortion
– What The Scriptures Say
Exodus 21:22 says, “If men strive (fight) and hurt a woman with child,
so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow; he shall surely
be punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall
pay as the judges determine.”
We
can deduce a couple of things from this verse. First, in God’s eyes, in order
for a woman to be with child, God expected her to be married! Second, God
considered a fetus to be human life, with the same rights and privileges as a
born baby! And that prenatal life has the same value as postnatal life. Life
does begin at conception. And to take such a life is a crime against God’s law,
and it should be a crime against man’s laws as well.
In
St. Petersburg, Florida in the spring of 1994, 19-year old Kawana Michelle
Ashley is turned away from an abortion clinic because she didn’t have enough
money to pay for an abortion. She shot herself in the stomach, hoping she would
kill the baby. She was unsuccessful and was consequently jailed on murder
charges after her baby was born three months premature and died. It is
interesting to note that had the abortion been performed in an abortion clinic
by a medical doctor, it would have been legal, and the doctor performing the
abortion would never have answered for his crime. She was charged with
manslaughter and third degree murder.
Things You Should Know About Abortion
Over
1.5 million babies are aborted every year in America. That’s over 4,000 babies
each week, one every 20 seconds! Over 30 million babies have been killed since
abortion was legalized in 1973. Minors who cannot legally purchase liquor or
cigarettes can obtain an abortion without parental knowledge or consent!
Medical
evidence that supports the humanity of the unborn continues to mount. By the
time an unborn child is six weeks of age, he/she has eyes, lungs, intestines, a
detectable heartbeat, and measurable brain waves. Abortion techniques are
excruciatingly painful for the living baby, whom they destroy. They are
savagely sucked from the womb, surgically dismembered, and salt poisoning
corrodes their skin. (And to think we called Adolph Hitler a monster!)
Husbands
have lost the right to have a voice in the decision about whether or not their
unborn children live or die. Dramatic advances have been made in the medical
treatment of unborn infants in the womb. Isn’t it strange that a mother is not required
to treat as a human, what medical science can treat as a patient!
Abortion
is dangerous to the mother, both physically and psychologically. A risk of
sterility is taken. There is a risk of habitual, spontaneous miscarriage in
future pregnancies and a marked increase in tubule pregnancies. Abortion on
demand runs counter to the emphasis of 20 centuries of Christian teaching.
Christianity was born into a world that had little respect for human life.
Slavery was universally accepted. Slaves, prisoners and persecuted minorities
were butchered in gladiatorial contests in the arena. Abortion and infanticide
were widely practiced.
Jesus
taught that all human life was sacred. He stressed the worth of the individual,
and insisted that He had come to “taste death for every man.” (Hebrews
2:9) Eventually, the influence of Christianity in the Roman Empire led to
laws that prohibited abortion, criminalized the practice of abandoning unwanted
infants, ended gladiatorial games and regulated the excesses of slavery.
God
hates hands that shed innocent blood. Proverbs 6:16-17 These six things doth
the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying
tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood.
Only
half of all abortions are done for such hardship reasons as rape, incest, and
danger to the mother’s life. The rest are sacrifices to convenience,
selfishness and greed. Such hardship cases are a false issue raised to distract
attention from the annual harvest of 1.5 million unborn deaths in this country.
Write
your congressmen and telephone your senator. Tell them that you believe that
the crime of abortion should be illegal in this “one nation under God”, and
that the penalty for it should be severe. I honestly believe this is what God
would tell them.
